DISABILITY BENEFITS: LABOUR MUST ABANDON PLANNED CUTS
Neurodivergent Labour welcomes the government’s decision to abandon its draft White Paper proposing further cuts to disability benefits.
However, we are angry that the government intends instead to introduce cuts one at a time.
We object to suggested cuts to Motability provision. Many neurodivergent people have mobility impairments or difficulty accessing public transport.
We are also appalled by the rise in accusations that disabled people are somehow faking our struggles or lying about our needs. This inaccurate and bigoted narrative harms disabled people and provides cover for cuts.
The benefits system needs reform. It needs to be easier to navigate, and to more closely meet the needs of claimants. We would hope that a Labour government would improve the system, but this Labour government is attacking it instead.
Strong opposition forced the government to back down from cuts earlier this year. If we step up this opposition, unity and solidarity, we can win again. We call on the labour movement to hold its government to account.
