Below is the ND Labour Executive’s statement on plans to reform the Mental Health Act being shelved for the duration of this Parliament:
Neurodivergent Labour regrets that reforms to the Mental Health Act were not mentioned in the recent King’s Speech, and urges Labour to include reforming the Mental Health Act as a priority in its next manifesto to make it fairer and less of a restriction on people’s lives.
We note that neurodivergent people are more likely to have mental health problems than the general population and require appropriate and humane person-centred support and treatment. We also note organisations such as Mind and the National Autistic Society have called for urgent reform of the Act.
Consider emailing your MP to ask them to support reform of the Mental Health Act to ensure neurodivergent people have a voice in the systems that are intended to support them.
